A Good Decade for Cent Varieties

A Good Decade for Cent Varieties

A Good Decade for Cent Varieties By: Joe Kennedy The first decade of the 21st Century has been very eventful for collecting Canadian cent varieties. Just by searching through pocket change, we can find about two dozen different major design varieties! It all starts with the issue of Test Token sets in 1999. In this year the Winnipeg Mint completed a new facility for plating coins. The plating plant is set up to plate coin denominations from 1¢ to $1. Special processes are used for plating copper, nickel, or brass onto steel blanks. The mint had already been using copper-plated zinc … [Read more...]

Pierre Napoléon Breton

Pierre Napoléon Breton

Pierre Napoléon Breton By: Mitch Goudreau Many of you have probably admired or shown some interest in Canadian tokens at some point or other, while perhaps not actively collecting them. This article’s intent is to give you some background on Pierre Napoléon Breton, a renowned early Canadian numismatist and Montreal coin dealer, who has left us with a numbering system that is still extensively used today. P.N. Breton was born in Montreal, Québec on June 10, 1858. At the age of 15 he was employed in a banking firm which may be where he first developed his interest in numismatics. His … [Read more...]

A Hansa Thaler

A Hansa Thaler

A Hansa Thaler By: Marc Bink This month marks the final installment of a series of articles on medieval German Thalers. So in honour of that, I’ve decided to cover a Thaler from my home town of Luebeck, a place which most readers probably have never even heard of. I’ve been collecting coins from Luebeck for about 8 years now, and they are few and far between, and tend to be pretty expensive. Some readers who have come to our bi-annual Money Shows probably have seen my display on the coins of Luebeck, or have been a captive audience to one of my presentations on Luebeck at one of our … [Read more...]

A Two-Taled Coin

A Two-Taled Coin

A Two-Taled Coin By Chris Boyer FRCNA # 19007; MCC of C # 3377 This article will tell the tales of one coin—to be precise, its two tales. Even to those familiar with Canadian silver dollars countermarked with the initials “J.O.P.” there is much more here than initially meets the eye. The second tale has taken a little more delving, but has proven to be quite intriguing, especially for those with a penchant for military history. Tale No. 1: The 1935 “J.O.P.” countermarked dollar Recently, a friend and fellow member of the Waterloo Coin Society, Len Trakalo, offered me his 1935 “J.O.P.” … [Read more...]
